Point System - Oklahoma Department of Public Safety


  • Your driver's license starts off with no points, known as a "clean" driving record. Each time you are convicted of a traffic offense, you begin to accumulate points against your record. If you accumulate 10 points on your license over a five year period, your license will be suspended.
  • Traffic Offenses & Their Points.
    • One Point Offenses:
      • Operating a defective vehicle.
      • Operating a vehicle without being licensed.
      • Leaving a vehicle unattended with engine running.
      • Towing or pushing vehicle improperly.
      • Failure to dim lights as required.
      • Failure to stop at required stops with explosives or flammable load.
      • Transporting hazardous substances without safety devices or precautions.
      • Improper lane usage.
      • Driving on shoulder, in ditch or on sidewalk.
      • Making improper entrance to or exit from trafficway.
      • Loading a vehicle so drivers view is obstructed.
      • Starting improperly from parked position.
      • Improper backing.
      • Spinning wheels.
      • Operating a vehicle with view obstructed.
      • Negligent driving.
      • Improper passing.
      • Operating a motor vehicle at speed greater than reasonable and proper.
      • Operating a motor vehicle at speed less than reasonable and proper.
      • Coasting or operating with gears disengaged.
      • Failure to follow instructions of police officer.
      • Failure to obey traffic instructions stated on traffic sign or shown by traffic control device.
      • Passing through or around barrier positioned to prohibit or channel traffic.
      • Failure to observe warnings or instructions on vehicle properly displaying them.
      • Failure to signal intention to change vehicle direction or to reduce speed suddenly.
      • Giving improper signal.
      • Improper stopping on roadway.
      • Improper turns.
      • Operating defective vehicle after receiving a warning or summons.
      • Impeding traffic (and under 40 M.P.H.).
      • Crossing center median.
    • Two Point Offenses:
      • Inattentive driving resulting in a collision.
      • Left of center or wrong way.
      • Failure to yield right of way.
      • Violation of driver license restrictions.
      • Following too close or improperly.
      • Failure to obey stop sign or traffic light.
      • Careless driving.
      • Speeding.
      • Contest racing on public traffic way.
      • Speed in excess of posted maximum.
      • Speed less than posted minimum.
      • Speed in school zone.
      • Radar checked speed violation.
      • Airplane checked speed violation.
      • Vascar (Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder).
      • Any violation related to a railroad crossing.
    • Three Point Offenses:
      • Speeding in excess of 25 M.P.H. above the posted speed limit.
    • Four Point Offenses:
      • Reckless driving without regard for the safety of others.
      • Failure to stop or to remain stopped for school bus loading or unloading.
  • Earning Credits Back. You can earn credits back in the following circumstances:
    • Two points shall be credited to a person's driving record upon successful completion of an approved Driver Improvement/Defensive Driving Course. Credit points shall be given once every twenty-four (24) months for completing an approved course, provided only one full course shall be acknowledged once every twenty-four (24) months.
    • Two points shall be credited to a person's driving record when the person has gone twelve (12) consecutive months without being convicted of any pointable violation that appears in 595:10-7-2 of these regulations.
    • Upon the reinstatement of a person's privilege to drive after a suspension which was based on violations listed in 595:10-7-2 of these regulations, the points level shall be reduced to five (5) points or less as provided in these regulations.
    • In addition to (1) (2) and (3) of this subsection, the point level shall be reduced to zero if a person is not convicted of any pointable traffic violation that is listed in 595:10-7-Z of these regulations for three (3) consecutive years.
    • The point level cannot be reduced below zero.
